Hong Kong airport adds more biometric immigration lanes to speed clearance

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) has introduced 12 additional automated biometric clearance lanes for immigration, known as e-Channels, allowing eligible Hong Kong residents to pass through arrival clearance just by scanning their faces.

The Face Easy e-Channel were first announced in September last year, offering a faster alternative to the traditional e-Channel service, which requires scanning a smart identity card or a QR code and verifying a fingerprint.

The additions are part of a wider rollout of 26 new e-Channels, which are expected to be launched in stages, replacing the existing ones. The upgrade is expected to be completed in 2027, when the total number will reach 52, according to the Hong Kong Immigration Department.

Since 2022, the international airport has also offered the Flight Token biometric service for departures, including self-check-in, baggage drop, automated security gates and boarding through facial recognition.

HKIA was recently named “Best Airport in the World” at the Global Travel Awards 2026, with millions of travelers casting their votes. It was also voted as the “Best Airport in China” in the 2026 TTG China Travel Awards for the third year in a row.

The airport is one of the busiest in the world, processing 61 million passengers in 2025.
