Smart-ID registration with remote biometrics launches with SK ID, iProov partnership

Smart-ID registration with remote biometrics launches with SK ID, iProov partnership

SK ID Solutions has announced facial biometric registration for Smart-ID accounts, combining smartphones’ NFC capabilities with biometric passports and identity cards to enable remote Smart-ID enrollment, through a partnership with InnoValor and iProov. The solution was also evaluated by TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH.

Smart-ID is a digital ID offering for financial services in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Users holding a biometric passport and possessing a mobile device with the Smart-ID app, a camera and NFC support can enroll their biometrics in seven steps, according to the announcement.

“Over the following months, tens of thousands of people have to update their Smart-ID accounts since they are turning three years old,” SK ID Solutions CEO Kalev Pihl points out. “Thanks to the new biometric identification, they can now also do that by using their biometric passports AKA even in situations where they do not have access to other forms of identification or are simply unable to visit a bank branch for this. This is also good news to the more than one million Smart-ID users in Latvia and Lithuania who can now upgrade their Smart-ID Basic account into a qualified electronic signature tool in just a couple of minutes.”

Smart-ID was launched in 2017 and now has 2.6 million users.

“We are delighted to be a core part of this ground-breaking solution, and to have passed the rigorous certification to EN 319-401, perhaps the most demanding civil conformance standard in the world,” comments iProov Founder and CEO Andrew Bud. “iProov brings cloud, machine learning and biometrics to the eIDAS world for the very first time.”

Latvian bank Luminor announced the launch of remote biometric onboarding for Smart-ID earlier this month.
