Bitwarden among first to implement FIDO credential exchange standards on iOS 26

Apple iOS 26 has landed, and it includes support for FIDO Alliance Credential Exchange standards to enable secure, end-to-end encrypted transfers of passkeys, passwords and other credentials across platforms and apps. A release from large open-source login management service Bitwarden says it is “among the first credential managers on iOS 26 to implement the Credential Exchange standards, helping lead passkey and password portability with a secure, standardized way for users to move credentials between Apple Passwords, Bitwarden and other compatible services.”
“FIDO Alliance standards deliver credential portability across platforms while preserving encryption, security and interoperability,” says the release. “With iOS 26, users can securely transfer passkeys and passwords into or out of Bitwarden (e.g., migrating credentials from Apple Passwords into Bitwarden or vice versa), expanding flexibility for end users and accelerating adoption of modern authentication methods.”
The protocol was developed with the FIDO Alliance and large industry players including Apple, Google and Microsoft. Development prioritized reinforcing cross-platform compatibility and user choice.
Bitwarden support for passkey portability will be available this week, enabling users to begin transferring passkeys and passwords shortly after updating to iOS 26.
In 2024, Bitwarden surpassed 10 million users and expanded its reach to over 180 countries. The company now supports over 50,000 business customers worldwide. It has embraced passkeys and worked to accelerate this industry shift through collaborations with the FIDO Alliance.
Wired magazine recently reviewed Bitwarden as “the best password manager for most people.”
