Digital payment service Alipay now supports facial recognition login

China’s largest digital payment service, Alipay, now offers its clients a facial recognition login option, according to reports by China Daily.

At a conference held earlier this year, Cao Kai, a senior director of Zhejiang Ant Small & Micro Financial Services Group, the Alibaba affiliate that owns Alipay, commented that “biological identification will become very important in the future”.

In Ocober it was reported that Alipay had partnered with Megvii to figure out new ways to integrate facial recognition identification into Alipay’s Wallet app. During the beta phase, the technology achieved a success rate of over 90 percent although it only works with iOS and some Android smartphones.

Users can enable logins by taking a selfie with a smartphone in a well lit enviornment.

A team in Alibaba’s subsidiary firm and finance affiliate Ant Financial is also developing face recognition technology for use with the Alipay online payment service.
